7 ideas to celebrate World Houseplant Appreciation Day

7 idées pour célébrer la journée mondiale d’appréciation des plantes d’intérieur

10 January is World Houseplant Appreciation Day. A unique opportunity for plant lovers to celebrate their leafy companions. But also for beginners to learn a little more about the benefits they can bring us. Both uplifting after the festive season and educational, this day is an opportunity to raise awareness of the wonderful world of plants. And also to realise that it can be within reach, whether you have green fingers or not. So if the post-Christmas blues have set in, seize the moment. Put the grey skies behind you and go green indoors while you wait for spring!

What are the benefits of houseplants? As well as adding a touch of colour and a gentle fragrance to your home, having plants in your living space can offer you significant health benefits. They provide a sense of wellbeing and relaxation when they're part of our home. Studies have shown that putting plants in your remote working space reduces stress and increases concentration and creativity. They improve air quality. Through photosynthesis, they absorb CO2 from the surrounding air and convert it into oxygen. They regulate ambient humidity, cooling it in summer and making it less dry in winter. Good air humidity can reduce headaches, respiratory problems, and ease allergies. Some plants have a depolluting effect and can eliminate toxic substances such as formaldehyde, benzene and trichloroethylene. A NASA study demonstrated the air-purifying capabilities of plants. They even recommend that every 150m² home should house 15 to 18 plants. That might sound like a lot. But with a little creativity, you'll reach the count quickly… a window box with edible plants for seasoning, medicinal plants like aloe vera in your bathroom, and the collection is underway…

So, what do you think? What if creating your own little green corner at home became one of your good resolutions for the year ahead? Here are 7 ideas to celebrate it, whether you're an expert on monsteras or a complete beginner:

1. Treating yourself to a new houseplant

What better idea to celebrate the National Houseplant Appreciation Day than to grow your collection? Head to your favourite shop or go and discover the new trendy urban garden centres in your city. You'll no doubt find the philodendron or succulent that'll bring a little fun to get through the last few weeks of winter. And apparently plants communicate and grow better together. Take the opportunity to rearrange their layout. They'll get to know each other better…

2. Music for plant growth?

More and more studies are showing that plants may have feelings. Even if this is still debated in the scientific community on certain aspects, it seems established that they react to music. Plants are apparently capable of perceiving the vibrations of sound waves, and this helps their growth… We'll let you judge for yourself with this article…

3. Finding a new decorative watering can

Appreciating your plants also means enjoying taking care of them. Take the opportunity to find a lovely new watering can. And make sure it finds its place in your décor. That way, you won't forget to water your plants!

4. Showering your houseplants

Plants also enjoy a little shower from time to time. With water at room temperature (25–30 degrees) and not too strong a jet, you'll dust them off in the blink of an eye! And less dust on the leaves means more photosynthesis. You'll help them grow faster and more easily. Plus, a shower will remove any pests that may be present.

5. ollas for gentle watering

Watering is a fundamental topic for houseplants, yet it is often too neglected. Plants need gradual watering. By offering them a olla à planter, these microporous clay water reservoirs, you'll allow your plants to regulate their own water needs with ease. And while you're at it, treat yourself by choosing a model that will blend into your interior decoration.

6. Treating yourself to a book about houseplants

Because the world of plants is infinite, treat yourself to a book about houseplants. Settle comfortably on your sofa and enjoy a moment of relaxation, just for you, in the little corner of nature you've created at home…

7. Crystals to boost my plants' health: "crystal botany"

Have you heard of crystal botany? Still fairly niche, this new trend proposes pairing crystals with our plants to boost their natural benefits.
